After the Philippines gained independence from the United States in 1946, Spanish declined rapidly as English became the predominant language of government, education, and business.

It is not used as a means of daily communication or in official government proceedings. However, Spanish colonial heritage is still evident in some aspects of Philippine culture, including place names, architecture, cuisine, and religious practices.
