H and HB's are generally good for sketching. 4B and 6B's are preferred for shading. HB and 2HB's are ideal for writing purposes. B pencils tend to produce more 'shine' than H's.

thnkx Poonam for info, its really useful. But my doubt was "i have seen people use only black pencil for sketching. so can we use color pencil also." Art :- 6B is great.brought it yesterday and its wonderful.

Why do sketches look better than line art so often?
Sketches are often quick and loose. This allows the mark making to be fresh and open. when you begin to line the work you are making the marks all the same weight and it takes the freshness away from the original sketch.
