You just need a pencil and some paper to give it a go. Hatching is one of the most popular ways to shade. The technique involves rapidly drawing lines, usually in the same direction, often at an angle. The closer the lines and the more pressure applied to the pencil, the darker the image.

For me, the key to good shading was knowing how to manipulate value, form, and texture. I learned this through drawing still life. This chart helped me visualize darker and lighter areas. When looking at a solid figure, mapping out values in relation to each other is really helpful
