Nitrogen fixation is a process wherein molecular nitrogen present in the air in the atmosphere is converted into ammonia and other nitrogenous compounds in the soil. Molecular nitrogen is metabolically useless to mostly all the organisms except microorganisms. So it needs to be converted in the metabolically useful form before use.
