Both QTP and selenium is on demand. QTP is easy to learn , user friendly and more powerful features as compared to selenium. But it's a license based.For selenium one should have good amount of programming skills .

As others have clearly mentioned in their answers, you would need one of these tools depending on the application under test (AUT). Lets assume you choose Selenium as the opportunity and learn it. There is no guarantee that you will always get a web based project to use selenium. Same holds true for QTP as well.There are number of applications that cannot be tested using both these tools as well. API validation would be a good example of that. So learn all the available tools, and dont be tied down by a particular tool. read less

As of now its Selenium which is in demand but a little tough to get master in it. But QTP is little lighter on learning side but since its a secured tool it is equally needed.

Same holds true for QTP as well.There are number of purposes that CAn't be tried using both these instruments as well.
