Grammar is the correct order of words in any language. Phonetics has to do with the sound of combinations of letters. Examples (Grammar): “We were waiting in a car for the sun to go down.” WRONG GRAMMAR! It sounds like the sun is going down on our car. CORRECT GRAMMAR: "We were siting in a car and waiting for the sun to go down." However, when we talk about phonetic - The phonetic combinations in English can sometimes make different sounds. For example, the letter 'ph' can sometimes sound like 'F'. The word 'ough' may be pronounced either off, ow, or oh. And the letter 'c' can sometimes be pronounced like 'K' as in came or if it is followed by an 'i' it is pronounced like 's' in city. Hope I answered your question correctly. read less

Grammar is the structure of the language - the framework, how it all fits together. Phonics (actually a method of teaching reading and writing) relates to the sounds of the language and how those sounds make up words.

Why do letter names exist in parallel with their phonic sounds?
It goes back to the days of Latin, since unlike the Greek alphabet, which had actual names for its letters (alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon etc.), it mostly took the sound that the letter stood for and if needed added an /e/ (short or long) to it.
