The phonics educators start with the base, with 1st group of letter and start it really slow by teaching the letter sounds to the young kids. Teachers uses song, action, letter sound, stories and rhymes for each and every single letter. Teachers also start giving blending and segmenting pratice to the kids once they complete just 3 letter sounds. For example, s a t as sat. And also each and every letter sound done so far are revised again at the start of each class thereby, making the roots clear to the kids. Phonics uses all the motor skills and hence makes it easy for the children to memorise the letter sounds. Thus, the phonics skills will increase on a daily basis with practice. read less

Why do letter names exist in parallel with their phonic sounds?
It goes back to the days of Latin, since unlike the Greek alphabet, which had actual names for its letters (alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon etc.), it mostly took the sound that the letter stood for and if needed added an /e/ (short or long) to it.
