Teaching college biology is akin to leading a continuous expedition into the living world—from the elegance of cellular machinery to the complexity of entire ecosystems. My classroom is not a venue for passive memorization of terms; it is a dynamic laboratory for cultivating scientific curiosity and rigorous thinking. I structure my courses around active inquiry. In lectures, instead of simply presenting facts, I pose a central problem—for instance, a disease outbreak or an ecological collapse—and guide students through the scientific method to unravel it. We dissect primary literature, debating experimental designs and interpreting raw data. In the lab, this philosophy becomes tangible. Students don't just follow protocols; they design their own experiments. When an unexpected result emerges, we treat it not as a failure, but as the most valuable learning opportunity—mirroring the true nature of research. One of my proudest moments was witnessing a student challenge a textbook model using data from our own class experiment. The challenges are real: the overwhelming volume of new discoveries, the need to support students with diverse backgrounds, and making abstract molecular processes feel tangible. This demands creativity, using analogies and interactive models. Ultimately, my goal transcends teaching biology. I aim to nurture scientific literacy—empowering students to think like scientists, evaluate evidence critically, and apply biological principles to understand themselves and the world, fostering informed citizens for a biologically complex future.
