The subject in the painting is very important. However, artist over a period of time from ancient cave painting to postmodern have depicted their choice of subject matter in different styles. The cave paintings are the response to a visual narration of daily life activities which includes portrayal of animals, humans and decorative motifs. As artist developed their painting styles and moved from depiction of mytholoigical, see renaissance or classical painting, characters to representing line , colour, form and shape as the main subject matter for the painting. For instance, Paul Jackson created his paintings without representing any naturalistic forms but used layers of dripped lines to make his paintings. Hope this might be helpful. Thanks read less

We all have certain goals in life and we live to complete it , if you start a painting first you have decide the subject on which you want to paint eg landscape portrait abstract but for all subjects are needed.
