Welcome to your introductory Kathak session! Kathak is a beautiful classical dance form from Northern India that blends storytelling with rhythmic movement. Here is how our first session will be structured:
-
Pranam (Invocation): We will begin with a traditional gesture of respect to the stage, the music, the rhythm, and each other.
-
Angik Abhinaya (Body Postures): You will learn the basic stance, known as Sausthava, and fundamental hand gestures (Mudras).
-
Tatkar (Footwork): We will explore the foundation of Kathak rhythm by practicing basic footwork patterns in Teental (a 16-beat time cycle).
-
Chakkar (Spins): You will be introduced to the technique behind Kathak’s signature swift pirouettes, learning how to spot and balance safely.
-
Rhythm & Recitation: We will practice reciting rhythmic syllables (Bols) before dancing them.
No prior dance experience is required. Wear comfortable Indian ethnic wear or loose clothing, and get ready to experience the joy of rhythm!
All age groups above 7 are welcome!
