Introduction to Geology; Understanding the Earth from the Ground Up

This course is designed for BSc students and anyone stepping into the world of geology for the first time. Starting from the very basics, this class builds a strong conceptual foundation in how the Earth works — its structure, composition, geological time, and the forces that shape its surface. Rather than memorising definitions, students will develop an intuitive understanding of geological processes that will support their entire degree programme. Topics covered include the internal structure of the Earth, plate tectonics and crustal movement, geological time scale, rock cycle overview, weathering and erosion, and an introduction to geological maps and field observations. Each concept is explained with real-world examples and visual references to make learning engaging and easy to retain. By the end of this class, students will have a clear, confident understanding of the foundational principles of geology and be well-prepared for deeper study in any branch of Earth science.
