This class is for the First Semester (Semester 1 of 8) BSc (NEP 2020/ CBCS) BSc Physics Honors students. The subject covered here is Mathematical Physics-I. This course will cover the correponding syllabus prescribed by the UGC and the Physics Departments of various Universities of India.
The broad outline of the structure of the course would be:
- Calculus (Function Plotting (univariate & multivariate); First Order (Ordinary) Differential Equations (Homogeneous and Non-homogeneous)
- Second Order (Ordinary) Differential Equations: Constant Coefficient & Variable Coefficient equations; Simultaneous Differential Equations (Euler's approach)
- Vector Algebra: Properties of vectors; scalal products and vector products of vectors and their geometrical interpretation; Introduction to Scalar and Vector Fields
- Vector Calculus: Vecor Differentiation, Directional and Normal Derivatives; Gradient, Divergence and Curl of Fields; Vector Identities
- Vector Integration: Line, Surface and Volume Integration (with scalar and vector fields); Flux and Rotation of vector fields; Gauss Divergence Theorem, Stokes Theorem and Green's Theorem
- Orthogonal Curvilinear Coordinates: Cartesian, Cylindrical and Spherical Coordinates; Derivation of Gradient, Divergence, Curl and Laplacian in these coordinate systems
After completion of the course, the student should be able to
- have a clear understanding of the concepts to be covered
- to solve problems based on these concepts
The student should be ready with their note books and related study material.
Normally, there will be 4 sessions per week; one or part of these four sessions will be a practice and problem session according the requirement expressed by the student(s).
