CU MA English Semester-1 | Core Syllabus + Advanced Academic Programme

The programme covers the five Semester-1 Core Courses, ranging from medieval and Renaissance literature through Elizabethan and Jacobean drama, Restoration and eighteenth-century literature, Romanticism and Victorian literature. Teaching follows the texts/sub-units selected for the current CU batch. The official syllabus itself expects students to develop critical and historical understanding rather than merely reproduce textual summaries. Every month includes 4 Core Intensive Classes. These concentrate on the immediate syllabus and examination requirements: close reading of prescribed texts, explanation of difficult passages, literary history, criticism and theory, relevant historical and cultural contexts, examination questions, and construction of clear and well-argued university answers. In addition, Semester-1 students may attend 1 Advanced Academic Session every month without an additional fee. This session is optional and is not a repetition of the syllabus class. It introduces interested students to wider literary theory, interdisciplinary interpretation and scholarly reading through areas such as history, philosophy, mythology, linguistics, psychology, anthropology and cultural studies. Research training begins gradually from Semester 1. Interested students learn how to search for reliable scholarship, read research articles critically, distinguish evidence from opinion, frame research questions, build original arguments, use academic citations and understand the process of writing abstracts and research papers. Students who develop sufficient ability may later be guided towards serious conference or publication-quality academic work; publication itself is never guaranteed. The programme therefore serves two kinds of students simultaneously: those who primarily want strong CU syllabus and examination preparation, and those who also want deeper theoretical knowledge, independent thinking and preparation for future academic research. Class structure: 4 Core Intensive Classes + 1 optional Advanced Academic Session per month. Group tuition fee for students joining in Semester 1: ₹2,000 per month. The joining fee remains unchanged through Semester 4. Regular attendance is expected. Ready-made notes, assignment/dissertation writing, research-paper ghostwriting and last-minute-only guidance are not offered.
