Uday Debanshi

My name is Uday Debanshi, and I have dedicated over 30 years of my life to the teaching and practice of Indian vocal music. With an M.A. in Music and a deep-rooted passion for classical forms, I have guided countless students—children, teens, and adults—towards mastering the art of voice and melody. Having recently retired from school teaching, I now continue to share this timeless art through both online and offline classes.

My journey as a teacher began three decades ago, and over the years, I’ve not only taught music but also cultivated a deep sense of discipline, creativity, and joy in my students. I believe that music is not just a subject—it is a way of life. Every raga, every note, and every pause carries emotion, history, and meaning. My goal has always been to help students feel this depth, even as they build their foundational skills.

I follow a traditional yet student-friendly methodology, designed to help learners at any level. My teaching begins with a focus on voice culture, which is the backbone of any successful vocal performance. From there, we move into the study of swaras (notes) and basic alankars (patterns). These form the essential building blocks that every student must internalize before advancing to complex compositions or improvisation.

In the early stages, I guide students through sargam and palta exercises, which are instrumental in developing pitch accuracy, breath control, and rhythm awareness. These practices are especially helpful for beginners, but even advanced students benefit from revisiting them regularly. My training also includes exposure to various ragas, bandishes, and taals, tailored to each student’s pace and comfort level.

One of the things I’m most proud of is creating a relaxed and encouraging environment for my students. Indian classical music requires patience and persistence, and I ensure my students feel supported at every step of their learning journey. I often integrate storytelling, listening sessions, and singing games to make classes more engaging—especially for younger learners.

Even though I have retired from formal school teaching, my enthusiasm for sharing music remains as strong as ever. I currently teach from home using my own instruments and provide personalized attention during every session. Whether it’s training young voices, helping adults rediscover their musical roots, or preparing serious learners for performances and exams, I adapt my teaching to fit individual goals.
