This used to be me when I was younger. I had a minimal attention span, and then I realised that it was to my favourite things when I did pay attention. I liked the tables. I liked multiplying, and it used to fascinate me. I did not like chemistry, but I liked listening to the periodic table song that made me memories the elements. It's about finding what you like and paying attention to that. So if he ignores a particular subject, try to make it more engaging. Try to make it fun for him.
