cell cycle has two main phases
Interphase : where cell prepares for division
M Phase (Mitotic phase) : where the cell actually divides
Interphase consists of three stages:
1. G₁ Phase (Gap 1)
The cell grows in size.
Organelles are duplicated.
Proteins and enzymes needed for DNA replication are synthesized.
Checkpoint: The cell checks for DNA damage before proceeding.
2. S Phase (Synthesis)
DNA replication occurs – each chromosome duplicates to form sister chromatids.
The amount of DNA doubles, but the number of chromosomes stays the same.
For example: A human cell goes from 46 chromosomes with single DNA → 46 chromosomes with two chromatids.
3. G₂ Phase (Gap 2)
Cell continues to grow and prepares for mitosis.
Proteins required for cell division are produced.
Checkpoint: Ensures DNA is fully replicated and not damaged.
