You have already studied different types of numbers such as natural numbers, whole
numbers and integers. Now let’s explore what rational numbers are and some of their
properties, ‘rational’ means ‘ratio’, which means ‘comparison’ between two or more
numbers. Rational numbers are denoted as fractions (numerator upon denominator).
The denominator should not be equal to 0. So, a number is a rational number if it can be
written as an integer divided by other integers.
Rational numbers are a part and parcel of our daily lives- whether you are sharing
pizzas or cupcakes with your friends, receiving interest on your savings account on
the regular basis or even playing a board game, everything involves rational numbers.
1.1 Introduction
1.2 Properties of Rational Numbers
1.3 Representation of Rational Numbers on the Number Line
1.4 Rational Numbers between Two Rational Numbers
In Class 8 Maths Chapter 1, you will learn -
Section 1.2 – In this section, you’ll study various properties of rational numbers
such as the closure property, commutative property, associative and distributive
property, the role of zero (0), the additive identity of rational numbers and
multiplicative identity of rational numbers.
Section 1.3 - In this section, you’ll learn how to represent natural numbers, whole
numbers, integers and rational numbers on a number line.
Section 1.4 - In this section, you will acquire knowledge about how to write rational
numbers between two rational numbers. It is interesting to know that there is always a
rational number between any two given rational numbers. The technique of finding the
‘mean’ between two numbers helps in finding the rational numbers between two
rational numbers.
For better understanding, many examples (along with their solutions) are provided. To
know more about the Class 8 Maths Chapter 1 Rational Numbers, you should explore the exercises below. You can also download the Rational Numbers Class 8 NCERT Solutions PDF, solved by expert Maths trainers.
