Vasu Sharma

Vasu Krishna Maharaj belongs to the 14th generation in the lineage of Banaras Gharana of Kathak. He is the grandsons of Padmashri Maharaj Krishna Kumar Ji. In this classical dance form he has been trained under, Pandit. Ashok Krishna Maharaj Ji and Pandita. Archana Joglekar Ji. His performance in prestigious dance festivals have been applauded by both, audience and critics/print media. His performance is distinguished for the usage of Natwari Bols Kathak.

Vasu Krishna Maharaj inherits the musical skills from his grandfather Padmashree Maharaj Krishna Kumar Ji, the only kathak exponent in contemporary era who performed extempore (as mentioned by Sunayana Hazarilal Ji in her interview to Sanjeet Nakat Akademi). This extempore dance performed from Ustaad Ahmed Jan Thirakwa to Ustaad Zakir Hussain, and jugalbandis with leading kathak performers.

This extempore dance tradition is carried forward by Vasu Krishna Maharaj now. Maharaj Krishna Kumar Ji choreographed many dance ballets and films and was the only Indian to receive "Golden Praque" for Wajid Ali Shah Dance Ballet.

Maharaj Krishna Kumar Ji's son and disciple, Ashok Krishna Maharaj Ji, who carried forward his legacy, has taught and trained Vasu Krishna Maharaj in all those intricacies he inherited. He has done choreographies and has danced in Bollywood movies. Now even Vasu Krishna Maharaj has also choreographed many performances in Salaam Bombay Foundation.

Abou Banaras Gharana:

Vasu Krishna Maharaj is from the lineage of Banaras Gharana which is also termed as "Janak of Kathak" and traces it's history from 1100 years old lineage. Banaras gharana is distinguished by " Natwari Bols" and Ashok Krishna Maharaj Ji has trained Vasu Krishna Maharaj in sharp and clean Nikaas of those bols.
