Why is "attach" missing from right-clicking "databases" in MS SQL Server Management Studio?

It is there you are just right clicking in the wrong place. Assuming you are in SSMS 2014 (same in 2008, 2008 R2, 2012. It is there you are just right clicking in the wrong place. Assuming you are in SSMS 2014 (same in 2008, 2008 R2, 2012. Likely the same in 2016 but have not verified) you need to right click on the Database folder to get the Attach option in the context menu. The detach option in on a database level because that is the action you are performing on that database. When you attach it is an action you are performing on the instance, in other words attaching a new database to the instance . read less
