Why do we use a dollar sign in Excel?

A dollar sign $ is called a locked cell reference. Locked cell references are one of the building blocks of Excel modeling. Without them, you will waste endless amounts of time re-writing formulas.

It means that the row or column which comes after thedollar sign is anchored or absolute. When you copyExcel formulas, they will copy cells referred in that formula relative to the position where they are being copied to.
