Why is it that the houses in the Tarai region and in Goa and Mangalore have sloping roofs?

These regions have sloping roofs as these regions receive heavy rainfall during monsoon. These kinds of roofs help in sloping down of rain water and gets collected instead of being stagnant on rooftop.

(a) The months of December and January are the coldest in Northern India where the temperature ranges between 10°-15°. (b) In summer, the mercury occasionally touches 50°C in some parts of the Rajasthan desert, whereas it might be around 20°C in pahalgam In Jammu and Kashmir. (c) On a winter night temperature at Drass in Jammu and Kashmir may be as low as minus 40°C. Tiruvananthapuram on the other hand may have a temperature of 22° C. (d) Annual precipitation varies from over 400 cm in Meghalaya to less than 10 cm in Ladakh and western Rajasthan. In the Himalayas precipitation is in the form of snowfall. Monsoon is derived from an Arabic word ‘mausim’ which means season.It is defined as periodic wind of Indian ocean and southwest Asia accompained by corresponding changes in precipitation. It causes heavy rainfall during rainy season in the months of May-September(wet monsoon) and dry spells during winter season in the months of October-April(dry monsoon). The period of time during monsoon where there is no precipitation is termed as ‘break’ in monsoon.During this period the monsoon trough shifts towards the foothills of Himalaya. This causes sharp decrease in amount of rainfall. Whereas the region along the foothills of Himalayas, Northeast India and Southern Peninsula receives a increase amount of rainfall.
