Covalent bonds: It is a bond formed between atoms by mutual sharing of the electron. To know how many electrons need to be shared to form a covalent bond, one electron must be mutually shared between atoms to form a covalent bond. 

PS: The carbon element has 4 electrons in the outer shell, meaning it needs 4 electrons to complete its shell.

How covalent bond is useful for carbon:

1. The Covalent bond helps the carbon element to complete its valency.
2. The covalent bonds help the carbon element to get into a stable state by mutually sharing the electrons with other atoms.
3. With the help of a covalent bond, the compound, which is the form with carbon element, is helpful for other applications such as CO2 (Carbon dioxide), CO (Carbon monoxide), CHCl3 (Chloroform).
