Q1.25 (iii):
Amongst the following compounds, identify which are insoluble, partially soluble and highly soluble in water? (iii) formic acid

Solution :

Step 1: Chemical Composition and Structure Analysis

Formic acid ($\text{HCOOH}$) is the simplest carboxylic acid. Its molecular structure consists of a polar carboxyl functional group ($-\text{COOH}$) attached to a hydrogen atom. This structure facilitates significant interaction with water molecules through hydrogen bonding [Per the principle of 'Like Dissolves Like'].

Step 2: Analysis of Intermolecular Forces

The solubility of a substance in water is determined by the balance between the solute-solute interaction, solvent-solvent interaction, and the solute-solvent interaction. Formic acid interacts with water in the following ways:

  • Hydrogen Bonding: The carboxyl group ($-\text{COOH}$) acts as both a hydrogen bond donor (via the $-\text{OH}$ group) and a hydrogen bond acceptor (via the $\text{C=O}$ oxygen atom). Water ($\text{H}_2\text{O}$) provides an ideal medium for these interactions.
  • Polarity: The high polarity of the $\text{C-O}$ and $\text{O-H}$ bonds in the functional group allows for favorable dipole-dipole interactions with water.
  • Hydrophobic Effect: Unlike higher carboxylic acids (e.g., stearic acid), the non-polar alkyl chain is absent in formic acid. There is no significant hydrocarbon portion to impede solubility [Per the concept of hydrophobic interaction, which increases with carbon chain length].
H C=O OH Polar Functional Group

Step 3: Solubility Categorization

Based on the quantitative analysis of the hydrophilic nature of the carboxyl group versus the minimal hydrophobic character:

Compound Solubility Status Justification
Formic Acid Highly Soluble Extensive H-bonding and high polarity

Step 4: Theoretical Conclusion

Formic acid is classified as highly soluble in water. Because the carboxyl group is highly polar and the molecule lacks a long, non-polar carbon chain, the hydration energy released upon the formation of solute-solvent hydrogen bonds is sufficient to overcome the lattice/intermolecular forces of the pure liquid acid [Per the Thermodynamic Law of Solution Formation: $\Delta G_{sol} = \Delta H_{sol} - T\Delta S_{sol} < 0$].

Final Solution: Formic acid is highly soluble in water.

I am a Physics educator with 24+ years of teaching experience, specializing in CBSE, ISC, State Boards, and Class 12 Physics. Over the years, I have taught 100,000+ students, helping them build strong conceptual foundations and achieve excellent results in Board examinations as well as competitive entrance tests. My approach to teaching is simple: make every concept easy to understand, regardless of a student's current level. I focus on building strong fundamentals first, followed by numerical problem-solving, derivations, practical applications, and exam-oriented preparation. This enables students to perform confidently in both Board examinations and entrance exams like JEE Main and NEET. My classes include: complete Class 12 Physics syllabus; chapter-wise concept building and numericals; Board-oriented derivations and theory preparation; Previous Years' Questions (PYQs) and sample papers; regular tests, assignments, and performance analysis; personalized doubt-solving and revision sessions; premium study materials and handwritten notes. Every student learns differently, so I adapt my teaching style to suit each student's pace and learning needs. My objective is not only to help students score excellent marks in Class 12 but also to develop a deep understanding of Physics that prepares them for future academic success.

Withโ€“ 15 year of teaching Experience in IIT-JEE, NEET, CBSE & STATE BOARD to teach physics Teaching is my passion, by my knowledge and experience I teach the student to in simple and interesting way so he/ she understand the subject very well. I have 4 years of teaching experience in online mode So that i understand wery well the challenge of online teaching. So that i develop different teaching style in online mode to explain the topic which can easily understand by student. I can teach from basic level to expertise level in subject My achievement is I taught more then 5000 thousand of student in offline and more then 1000 student in online classes of reputed coaching. My many student are in IIT, NITs, doing MBBS, also they score very well in Board examination. In on-line mode I want explore my self . Share my knowledge and experience with student of different part of country and connecting myself with new edge of education system that emerging very fast. If student follow my point to point guidelines, take regular class, do home work, give regular test, follow my teaching notes and shares their problem, ask doubts then he will definitely improved to expert level. If you believe in yourself you have a strong will power Commited to study which save your travel time and money then go for on-line class.
