Surjo Zharf specialises in Indian classical music, Rabindra Sangeet, ghazals, and spiritual songs. He is the grand-nephew of legendary Rabindra Sangeet singer Ashoketaru Bandyopadhyay. Zharf was exposed to music from a very young age. His taaleem began in childhood with traditional Bengali songs, especially Rabindra Sangeet. He learnt from several teachers, and has been a student at Dakshinee as well. For a grounding in Indian classical music, he became a shagird of Sangeetratna Nabhodeep Chakraborty of Qasur-Patiala Gharana. He learnt Rabindra Sangeet from eminent teachers like Manoj Murali Nair and Somali Mukherjee. He also learnt Teen Kobir Gaan from Nupurchhanda Ghosh. He is able to sing a variety of different compositions, is a skilled harmonium player, and has been certified with distinction from Trinity College London. He also holds a Masters degree in Urdu language and literature from Aligarh Muslim University.
