The cell cycle consists of two main phases: interphase and the M phase. Interphase is the longest phase and is divided into three parts—G₁, S, and G₂. In the G₁ phase, the cell grows and prepares the necessary components for DNA replication, much like a student gathering books and stationery before studying. During the S phase, the cell duplicates its DNA, similar to photocopying notes for sharing. In the G₂ phase, the cell checks for errors and prepares for division, like proofreading and organizing materials before an exam. The M phase, or mitosis, is the actual division process and includes four stages. In prophase, chromosomes condense and spindle fibers form. In metaphase, chromosomes align in the middle of the cell. During anaphase, sister chromatids are pulled apart to opposite poles, and in telophase, nuclear membranes reform around each set of chromosomes. Finally, cytokinesis divides the cytoplasm, resulting in two identical daughter cells. This entire cycle ensures proper growth, DNA replication, and distribution for the next generation of cells.
