An organism in which cellulose is absent in its cell wall is said to have a non-cellulosic cell wall. In such microorganisms, cellulose may be replaced with some other component as pectins (d‐galacturonic) and hemicelluloses (d‐xylans, d‐glucans, d‐mannans, etc.). This case is found explicitly in most of the marine algae, namely species of Bryopsis, Caulerpa, Udotea, Halimeda and Penicillus and of one freshwater alga, Dichotomosiphon. Non-cellulosic cell wall function is to act as pressure vessels, preventing over-expansion of the cell when water enters.
