I have progressed in HTML and CSS. Codeacademy lines up JavaScript as next, FreeCodeCamp lists JQuery as next. Which is the best next step and why?

I would say JavaScript before jQuery because jquery is a Javascript library and if you jump in straight away to jquery you won't be interested in doing in Javascript.
