The concept what you are looking for is Load Balancing. It is simply distributing your website traffic load between your servers, so that your website will not break down or slow respond. This is a must needed one for a large scaled website.

There are lot of things you will need to consider- 1. revisit your code, improve algorithms 2. Ensure queries are indexed and you are using some type of cache (Memcached or Redis), You can cache your entire website 3. For Web server you can either scale out using more number of servers behind the load balancer or scale up by using bigger server with more processing power, more RAM 4. Scaling relational databases is bit difficult (most viable option is to use bigger machine) but you can surely do some optimization by forming db clusters.. 5. Content delivery service, Offload your static content to CDN service. that saves lot of work for your web servers You can read about stackoverflow story as they are also using Microsoft technology stack. read less
