What are the typical indian classical songs which a good learner should attempt first?

If you are a starter, try to learn the basics of musics which will really help you a lot further in your future musical journey. Viz. sense of 12 swaras(notes) in North Indian Style, then the concept basi Ragas in ten Thatas. Chhota kheyals with Alaps. Taans etc.

You can learn in initial stage simple bhajans and other songs like "Payoji Maine Ram Ratan dhan payo....."or "Radhe rani de daro bansi mori....." there are many other classical songs too from filmy sangeet...you can start up with that.

Would request you to look into songs like manmohini morey (from movie Yuvraj) . Also, songs like madhuban me radhika, nache mann mora magan, mann tarpat hari darshan ko aaj etc.would come under the classical category. read less

I say Forget Classical... Learn the music that touches your heart!! i always teach my students the songs that they love first and then slowly guide them into understanding the notes and the classical theory :-)

I dont think it makes much difference...some times you will get the only benefit of Scale....otherwise the teacher has to shift into your Scale to teach you but in same gender case, you will find no scale shifting issues...
