The experience that particular teacher has. Teaching methodology, singing level of the tutor and the ability to convey things well. Indian classical music should be taught in an interactive manner, as the amount of content is huge and grasping the same is a challenge if the tutor is not so good

It all depends on what is your level of knowledge & proficiency in Music- theory & Practice; as well as your purpose to study music - for Exam/ Performance/ competition etc. If you have already learnt Classical in particular Gharana/style, it is easier to follow same further. But choice is yours to change to another Gharana- with a bit more effort. More than Popular name of Guru, choose sincere trainer/teacher & stick for at least 1 year to check , if you can do well. read less

Is it beneficial if someone takes Indian Classical Vocal lessons from a trainer of same gender ?
I dont think it makes much difference...some times you will get the only benefit of Scale....otherwise the teacher has to shift into your Scale to teach you but in same gender case, you will find no scale shifting issues...
