There are many to choose from. Zoom, skype, google hangouts. Each of them has a screen sharing option so that both the teacher and the student are watching the same thing, be it a pdf, PPT, video, word documents, or even play Youtube. Additionally, for Mathematics, I use a Wacom tab which I can use to write on a drawing application like Smooth draw or paint and write and show equations, drawings etc. live which both the teacher and the student follow together.
