Firstly u must be familiar with the exposure triangle i.e., sensitivity (ISO), shutter and aperture. By using various combinations of these three u'll be able to control the exposure, and the camera has an built in reflected light meter to measure intensity of light entering the camera, its is seen in the view finder and facilitates u to control the exposure in the camera. and for ur knowledge about the terminology u don't control light in the camera, u control the exposure. and outside u control the intensity or the quality of light or color etc.
