Carnatic music has homogenous and Hindustani music has a heterogeneous Indian tradition. Carnatic music has a restrained and intellectual character as compared with the more secular Hindustani traditions. The major vocal forms of Hindustani music are Dhrupad, Khayal, Tarana, Thumri, Dadra and Gazals.
