Hindi's development began during the Bhakti movement when saints used vernacular languages in their poetry to express their emotions. During this time, Hindi emerged as one of the primary languages. During the British Raj, a language divide emerged between Hindi and Urdu. In the 19th century, the Hindi-Urdu controversy arose to bridge this gap, giving Hindi its distinct identity.
