Harmonium Harmonium came to India in late 1800s. It was a smaller version of the reed organ. It had fewer sets of reeds, and had a hand-pump instead of foot pedal. As a result, it had much smaller volume of air and much smaller echo chamber. This resulted in a softer sound with limited range and much less depth. The result of this smaller size and softer sound was that, unlike the reed organ, it could not be heard till the back of a theater auditorium (microphones were not in use then). However, they were ideal in private house concerts where reed organs were too loud and cumbersome. As a result, harmoniums were adopted by the tawaifs and baijis, especially those who had some kind of theater background. read less
