Did the Beatles use a modern mellotron or an old harmonium ?

It’s not a harmonium. It’s a mellotron, but I don’t know if I’d call it a “modern mellotron”. A mellotron has banks of tapes containing short recordings of instrumental sounds, one short tape for every key on the instrument, and different banks holding recordings of different instruments. It was a new thing at the time, but its main function has been superseded by digital sampling technology. It still sounds cool, though, and is a nice contrast to the cleaner, more perfect sounds available through sampling. read less
