Your Prof is likely seeking to ensure that everyone gets exactly the same Hadoop installation by using a specific container image with all the correct tooling and libraries installed. This is a big advantage of Docker: it provides a very simple way to package and deploy software repeatably. Then everyone can follow along and do exactly the same thing the prof says and it will just work. You can of course install Hadoop directly on your Mac. But when your prof starts giving you exercises and they don't work on your Mac because you are missing some tools, or files are in a different place, or… you’ll wish you had run the Docker version. read less
