An ion is a charged atomic species. Basically to stable the atoms they gain or lose electrons depends on their electronic valence shell. If they lose an electron, they form a cation or positively charged atom. If they are gaining electrons, they form an anion or negatively charged atom. For example Na atom loose electron and form Na+
