A bond that mutually shares its electrons with two elements to attain a noble gas configuration (8 electrons in the outermost shell) is called a covalent bond. Every element/compound has an ultimate aim: To attain 8 electrons in a valence shell. Together, they win in that goal. Covalent bonding is essential in carbon as it has a valency of 4. It can share its electrons with a small atom like hydrogen easily. It also shows allotropy (meaning it is present in different forms like a diamond, graphite, etc.). Hence, covalent bonding is essential.
