Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is a standardized test taken by candidates aspiring for an academic career in the U.S. Most colleges and B-Schools of U.S. consider the GRE score when it comes to admission procedure.

The GRE is a multi-stage exam that evaluates verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, analytical writing, and critical thinking skills of candidates. It is a computer based exam. If computer based GRE exam is unavailable, the same can be opted in optional paper format.

Authority of GRE exam

The GRE test is governed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) since 1949. ETS is a a private non-profit organization.

Importance of GRE exam

If studying abroad and getting a prestigious foreign degree is your dream, then GRE is the first step to it! An impressive GRE score will not only give you an International exposure but also open several high-profile career options for you. A good GRE score also increases your chances of getting Scholarships. However, some Graduate schools give a lot of importance to GRE and some don’t. Importance of GRE differs from Program to Program you are seeking admissions into. For instance, a program related to arts & humanities may give less importance to your Quantitative scores in GRE as compared to your Verbal Scores.

Eligibility criteria of GRE exam

There is also no age limit, or minimum qualification required to take GRE. Anyone who is interested in pursuing a Graduate program from a reputed Business school can take GRE irrespective of one’s nationality, caste or creed.

Uniqueness of GRE exam

GRE is the only graduate level exam where, students can skip questions or go back on the computer screen to alter their answers. Usually no computerized tests don’t allow this ‘go-back’ feature.

Score of GRE exam

The GRE exam is marked on a scale range between 200-800.Students taking up the computerized GRE test can get their test score within 10-15 days of the original test date.

‘Score Select’ in GRE exam - The Score Select option of GRE exam allows students to take up the test multiple times and only use the score of session, candidates wants to. The score selected by GRE applicants are forwarded to B-schools or graduate colleges.

Paper based GRE exam

October, November and February are the months where GRE paper based test is conducted.

GRE tests are conducted in Prometric testing centers. GRE test is conducted in more than 1000 test centers across 160 nations.

Students should register atleast two calendar dates prior, keeping time in hand for their GRE exam.

Appointments for GRE exam are booked on first come first serve basis.

The follow-up steps are as follows:

  • Register for GRE exam
  • Sign-up for free GRE Search option
  • Order GRE Test preparation study materials
  • Take up the GRE test
  • View GRE scores/result
  • View/change or cancel the existing GRE registration
  • Order additional GRE score reports (if required)
  • Use free GRE Diagnostic Service

Cancelling GRE exam

If you cancel GMAT exam registration 4-days prior to the final test day, you will get the entire sum of money back.

GRE Re-test

There should be a gap of 21-days between GRE original test date and re-test date.Candidates can take up the computer-delivered GRE General Test once in every 21 days, up to five times within any continuous rolling 12-month period (365 days).

GRE exam fees

The registration fee for GRE exam is 12,000INR. The fee for late registration in GMAT exam is U.S.$50.

For candidates appearing for GRE computerized test, must carry:

  • Valid and acceptable identity proof
  • Authorization voucher (if required)
  • Copy of GRE confirmation email

For candidates appearing for GRE paper test, must carry:

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) consists of two tests:

  • GRE General Test
  • GRE Subject Test

GRE Revised General Test:

Started in August 2011, GRE Revised General Test has 3 Sections:

  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Quantitative Reasoning
  • Analytical Writing

The GRE Revised General Test is the only Admissions Test for graduate or business school that allows you to skip questions, go back and modify your answers and answer the questions in the sequence you wish to. You can take GRE again and send your Best score to Business Schools using the Score Select option. GRE does not test candidates on any particular field or area but it rather tests on how candidates will respond to situations faced in business world, irrespective of the Nationality they belong to.

GRE Subject Special exam

GRE Subject Tests examine your knowledge in a specific field of study. These paper based tests showcase your understanding and familiarity with the above subjects and give you a niche over others while getting an Admit into Graduate Programs of your choice. Students need to have a strong educational background in their respective field of study to appear for these tests.
