I taught English communication skills at a higher secondary school to pre-university students in the vocational stream. My students were mostly between 16 and 19 years old, typically from rural backgrounds with limited exposure to English. I have taught for approximately 8 years, training students in reading, writing, speaking, listening, brainstorming, and expressing themselves through various activities like public speaking, debates, role-plays, group discussions, research projects, marketing skills, negotiation skills, and presentations. My students generally hesitated to communicate in English and to express their thoughts openly, mostly out of shyness. They had limited vocabulary and often struggled with framing grammatically correct sentences. I helped them build correct sentences and encouraged them to keep repeating until they got a natural hang of it. I trained them in grammar and consistently encouraged them to speak in English, no matter what. I gave them multiple opportunities to prepare and present, offered consistent feedback, and guided them in their areas of improvement. I also paired them with buddies among their friends and classmates to support each other's growth, and I always made sure to maintain a friendly and approachable bond with all of them. Over time, I could see students summon up the courage to speak in front of their peers and push themselves to do their best. Gradually, they became more and more confident. It is truly a proud feeling to see how my students have stepped out of their cocoons and grown into fine young professionals today
