The Britishers stated the reason to be administrative convenience in ruling the huge Bengal province. But, Indians knew that it was based on religious lines. West Bengal had a large Hindu population, and East Bengal was a Muslim dominated region. It was one of the first instances by the Britishers to 'divide and rule' in India. Swadeshi Movement was initiated in response to the division.
