The avartan is the cycles four measures of two-beats, three-beats, two-beats, three-beats respectively, however the overall ten beat pattern may not be altered, i.e., in North Indian Music/Dance.
It is composed of measures "Vibhag" which are in turn composed of beats "Matra". For instance "Jhaptaal" Avartans may be of any number of beats. The most common numbers are 16(Teentaal), 14(Dhmaar), 10(Jhaptaal), 8(Keherva), 7(Rupak), and 6(Dadra). Most of the music played in Northern India today is in one of these numbers.
