Nitrogen fixation means to fix or change atmospheric nitrogen into the usable form. Although the nitrogen percentage is very high in the atmosphere, neither plants nor animals can directly use it. Therefore plants convert it into nitrates and nitrites form which are utilised by plants. This is done with the help of leguminous plants which have bacteria like rhizobium in their roots. These bacteria are called nitrogen-fixing bacteria.
