After 1857, the British knew that if India gets united, their regime of power will end. In the starting of 1905, Indian national movement was on its peak. Moderators and extremist leaders were promoting different ways of nationalism for Indians. Bengal was the centre of these movements. Lord Curzon, who was viceroy back then, thought to divide India on religion basis to break the momentum of Indian national movement. He divided Bengal based on Muslim majority area one side and Hindu popularity area another side. It was his approach of divide and rule then.
