Why is India's performance at the IMO so low in spite of having one of the toughest engineering entrance exams (the JEE)?

Well as an IITIAN I would say that India's performance in IMO as you pointed out is the result of single focused approach of out teaching pattern , an average student preparing for IIT studies Maths , physics and chemistry at the level of Masters degree of many other countries ....but that study is not to promote liking towards the subject ..just to clear an exam. For example of I really love maths I will probably not make into IITs or even an average institution because then I will mess up my chemistry so read less
