If you are a beginner than newsprint paper is best.It is light weight ,smooth, cheap and good for rough practice. but if you are in advance level you need a acid free paper like canson 160gsm, It comes in white and color paper ideal for charcoal and pastel color both.

Textured paper like newsprint, toned paper, or rough sketch paper (e.g., Strathmore 400 series).

For a charcoal sketch, you'll want a paper with a rough surface that will hold the charcoal well.

Canson Mi-Teintes or Strathmore 400 Series. These papers have enough texture to hold the charcoal and allow for layering and blending. Choose a medium to heavyweight paper (at least 80–100 lb / 130–160 gsm) for best results.
