Yes. It is very important to do a sketch before drawing because it helps you to plan your drawing. Some benefits are that you use your eraser less and that keeps the paper good for drawing.

See it depends on how well your mind can see the composition of the drawing. Initially no one can do it without sketching but with some level of expertise you can start painting directly with a brush and colours but it takes time to build this skill.
