Ask a Question
Nitrogen cannot be utilised directly by the majority of living organisms.
So, it has a five-step process in the nitrogen cycle. One of those is nitrogen fixation which is also the first step.
NITROGEN FIXATION:
This process involves the conversion of gaseous nitrogen into ammonia, which can be used by plants.
The bacterias process this conversion of nitrogen into ammonia.
Bacterias responsible for fixation:
(1) SYMBIOTIC - ex: Rhizobium(in the root nodules of leguminous plants)
(2) FREE LIVING BACTERIA - ex: Azobactor, Nostoc, Cynobactor, etc.
