Market structure is simply a structure which you see in any kind of market (not just our typical market which we see outside our home eg. vegetable, meat etc). So to give an example consider a market where everyone sells chocolates, in order to find out the structure of this market what all things would you consider?
1) you would consider the number of different companies which are selling chocolates, this includdes both Indian and foreign companies
2) You would have to consider how much market they dominate. for eg: lets say dairy milk chocolates have 30% market share : this means that 30% of 100% of chocolates in the market are supplied by Dairy milk.
3) other factors include market monopoly and monopsony, vertical integration (that is for example how easily or well connected they are to other industries down the line say chocolate milk company)
4) How loyal the customers are. For eg. lets say some other foreign company comes up with a really nice chocolate product, how many of the customer base (that is the percentage of customers) of previous coompany will remain with that company and keep using the first product instead of this new foreign company one.
So these are some of the factors that determine a market structure. So next time you see an ad on TV try figuring out this structure a company would be having. All the best.
